The scene is set for our country’s best young talent to shine on the international stage with the Australian 21/U team ready to do battle at the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana.
And with three GIANTS Netball athletes selected in Head Coach Tania Obst’s side, there is plenty of reason for GIANTS fans to take a keen interest in the tournament.
Star 2017 performer Jamie-Lee Price, new 2018 roster member Kiera Austin and 2017 training partner Teigan O’Shannassy will all don the Green & Gold dress in Africa, and hope to add another world title to the Australian trophy cabinet.
In all, the Aussies will play four round-robin games before the Finals Series starting on Thursday evening, 13 July, against some of the best young netballers from across the globe.
First up for Australia is a clash with Zimbabwe on Saturday 8 July (6.00pm AEST) before the team backs up to face Singapore on Sunday (6.00pm AEST).
The team will play their third game in three days on Monday when they do battle with Barbados (8.00pm AEST) before having a rest day ahead of their final regular round against South Africa on Wednesday 12 July (7.00pm AEST).
From Thursday to Sunday the Finals Series takes over and the Aussies will hope to be well in the running for the Gold Medal.
Speaking earlier this year, Obst – who is also GIANTS Netball’s assistant coach – said she was really excited about the playing group and what they could achieve so far away from home.
“It’s certainly been the toughest, and most challenging selection that I’ve ever been involved with, as it should for a national team,” said Obst.
“With the introduction of Suncorp Super Netball, also aligned with the Australian Netball League, we have seen an increase in opportunities for our athletes to further their development, providing a strong pool to select from.
“The team has diversity in all areas of the court which is going to allow for different styles of play, when and if required.
“We are very confident that we have selected the right mix of athletes to represent our country,”
Netball NSW and GIANTS Netball would like to wish the team and staff all the very best for the tournament and hope they can bring back the gold to Australia.
