O’Keeffe named Assistant Coach

GIANTS Netball have signed their new Assistant Coach and it’s a familiar face of NSW Netball – Jenny O’Keeffe. A respected coach with many successes to her name within the Netball NSW pathways, O’Keeffe brings with her an impressive coaching resume and years of experience at the local, state and national level.

O’Keeffe worked at the elite national level alongside GIANTS Netball Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald as Assistant Coach of the Sydney TAB Swifts from 2005-07, and they proved to be a winning combination as together they led the team to three Grand Finals and back-to-back Premierships.

At the semi-elite level, O’Keeffe was the Assistant Coach of the NSW Blues Australian Netball League team in 2013 and the NSW Waratahs in 2009. She was also Assistant Coach of the NSW 21/U State team in 2011 and the NSW 19/U State team in 2009 – with both teams being named National Champions those years.

As Head Coach of the Marie Little OAM Shield State team – a side that plays in the only national netball competition for women with an intellectual disability – O’Keeffe led her players to victory four years in a row, taking home the Marie Little OAM Shield from 2015-18.

O’Keeffe has years of experience in the NSW State League competition, having acted as Head Coach of the Sydney University team from 2014-15, the Manly Warringah Netball Association Div 1 team from 2008-13, the Sydney Storm Div 1 team from 2005-07, the Penrith Netball Association Div 1 team in 2004 and the Ku-ring-Gai Netball Association Div 1 team in 2003. She led sides to Premierships in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015.

She was also the Head Coach of the GWS Fury Opens team in the Netball NSW Premier League competition from 2016-18.

O’Keeffe has been recognised for her hard work by Netball NSW and was named as Netball NSW Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2017.

Fitzgerald is pleased to have O’Keeffe back at her side and is looking forward to working with her again as the GIANTS look to bring home a Premiership in 2019.

“Jenny is a skilled coach who holds a wealth of netball knowledge and has extensive experience working within the high-performance environment and we are thrilled to welcome her to the GIANTS in 2019.

“I believe that Jenny will have a wonderful impact on the GIANTS Netball team and will fit well within the close family unit we have built. Her professionalism and passion, along with her steady and calm nature, are exactly what we need at the GIANTS.

“Her past accomplishments and ability to lead teams to championships speak for themselves and I have seen first-hand how she is able to help shape a winning team. I have absolute confidence that Jenny will play a big part in driving GIANTS Netball to new levels of competitiveness and success in 2019 and beyond,” says Fitzgerald.

Her new Assistant Coach is likewise excited about her new role.

“This is a fantastic opportunity that I am very grateful for and I am so excited to be able to work with the GIANTS Netball team, Julie and the staff next season. Julie has built a strong and skilled team and the GIANTS have become a real force to be reckoned with over the past two years. I can’t wait to join their ranks and be part of a team who have already been able to achieve great things.

“Having worked with Julie in the past, I know the love that she has for the sport and it is always a joy to work with someone who has such passion for what they do,” says O’Keeffe.

O’Keeffe will take up the role when GIANTS Netball officially return for their pre-season in January 2019.
