Suncorp Super Netball is heading to Australia’s Capital as GIANTS Netball host Adelaide Thunderbirds at AIS Arena on Sunday 1 July.
GIANTS are coming off a 53-all draw with Sunshine Coast Lightning on the Sunshine Coast in Round 8, while Thunderbirds are coming off a 56-76 loss to West Coast Fever in Perth. The last time the two teams met was in Round 2 this season, GIANTS claimed a 71-48 win in Adelaide. Their 71-goals and 23-goal win set a new club record for highest score and was the biggest win margin in Suncorp Super Netball.
GIANTS are aiming to continue that pattern on Sunday. As the team with the best defensive record in the league, conceding on average 54 goals per match, they will be facing the team with the worst attacking and defensive records.
GIANTS Netball Captain Kim Green isn’t letting those facts distract the team from their game.
“We know Thunderbirds are really stinging for a win,” she says. “I think they are really pushing themselves and having great performances.”
She is also confident of their game plan heading into the match.
“From my point of view it’s just instilling confidence that we can do it and we can do it together and if everyone does their individual work it all works out as a team and as a unit.”
GIANTS Netball defender Sam Poolman will play her 50th National League match in Round 9 against the Thunderbirds, the team for which she made her elite debut and who she played 24 of her 49 matches for between 2013 and 2016. Poolman has played 25 matches for GIANTS in the Suncorp Super Netball league.
“I was actually excited when I heard that that was the game it was falling on because I think it’s really special to debut at one club and then come up against them on your 50th game,” Poolman says.
“I’m actually really excited to be able to reach that. It’s really special for me that I get to play at this level and that I’ve reached 50 games,” she says.
As to getting to play at AIS Arena in front of their ACT fans, Green can’t wait to bring world-class action to Canberra once again.
“We love going down to Canberra,” Green says. “We love the environment; we love the atmosphere.”
The game starts at 3PM AEST on Sunday 1 July and will be broadcast on Telstra TV and the Netball Live App.
