In an historic day for the newly-formed Club, GIANTS Netball are excited to announce Kimberlee Green has been appointed Captain ahead of the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball season.

A stalwart of the game, Green is the natural choice for the Club’s inaugural Captain having played at netball’s top level since 2004 – notching up 178 elite domestic caps and 72 appearances for the Australian Diamonds throughout her celebrated career.

Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald said Green’s resume spoke for itself, however it is how the 30-year-old’s teammates acted around her that solidified the decision.

“For me, Kimberlee as Captain is a no-brainer. She has the experience necessary to lead a team, and that’s especially important for a Club that is entering its debut season,” Fitzgerald said.

“Not only has Kimberlee the experience and knowledge necessary, but importantly she has the respect of her teammates and that’s something that cannot be underestimated. That support is felt both on and off the court, which therefore creates an incredibly solid unit.

“As a coach that makes my job a lot easier, as well as enjoyable. We’re doing some exciting things at GIANTS Netball and we can’t wait for Round 1 so we can show our Members and Fans just what we can do.”

Green admitted to being humbled by the announcement, however was committed to the responsibility that is at hand.

“I am very excited and honoured to be named inaugural Captain; a responsibility I do not take lightly,” Green said.

“I was just always looking for something fresh and something to spark my netball again (in 2017) and I feel like Julie (Fitzgerald) has been able to implement that for me; being named Captain on top of that is a nice bonus.

“For me things don’t change. Without the (Captain) title I think I would still be the same person, but it is a complete honour and I am here to do a job, and that’s to win some netball games and to hopefully bring home a Championship.”

Fitzgerald confirmed Green’s supporting leadership would be voted upon by the playing group in early 2017.

An announcement regarding the GIANTS Netball Leadership Group will be made in due course.

GIANTS Netball will begin their Suncorp Super Netball campaign at home when they host cross-town rivals the NSW Swifts at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on Saturday 18 February.
