Fitzgerald: Fast5 World Series

Last October GIANTS Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald was in the stands cheering on our Aussie athletes at the Fast5 World Series in Melbourne, however this year, Fitzgerald will be a lot closer to the action as the Australian Assistant Coach.

Fitzgerald will be working with Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich from West Coast Fever and is excited to see what they can achieve together as a team.

“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to work with Stacey and to be a part of such a different game and be able to look at it from a different viewpoint,” said Fitzgerald.

The style of Fast5 differs dramatically from traditional netball and Fitzgerald is aware that the rolling substitutions, shorter quarters and high point shooting zones require a different coaching approach.

“My coaching approach changes a lot with Fast5, there are different rules, there’s only five players on the court – so you get to play around with different attacking and defensive strategies, and I think that’s what’s exciting about it,” said Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald who from 2012 to 2013 coached the Australian Institute of Sport Netball squad is looking forward to reconnecting with the players who came through the program as junior athletes to now at National representation level years later.

“We had a great time at the Institute. I really enjoyed the couple of years we were all together down there, so to be able to reunite with a few of them in Fast5 is really great” said Fitzgerald.

Australia is yet to take home the coveted Fast5 World Series Title and with 2018 being the last year Australia is hosting the event, Fitzgerald’s says the team is competing with the intention of winning.

“We would love to win the Series as it’s the last one in Australia and we’re yet to do that, so we’re definitely going in to take the trophy home,” said Fitzgerald.

Looking at the calibre of athletes throughout the competition Fitzgerald believes it’s going to be an exciting competition with many new talent on display.

“All the teams have mixed it up quite a bit, there are a lot of unknown players in there and a lot of young players coming through, so there’ll be a lot of scouting in those early in games,” said Fitzgerald.

The Fast5 World Series takes place this Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October in Melbourne. View Broadcast Information here.
