GIANTS Netball will head to Qudos Bank Arena as part of a blockbuster Double Header to open their 2018 Suncorp Super Netball campaign.
Netball Australia announced the 2018 Fixtures this morning, confirming the Club will host seven home games at four venues next season; starting with defending Champions Sunshine Coast Lightning in Round 1.
The world’s best netball league will return to Qudos Bank Arena in Round 7 for a second Double Header event, featuring cross-town rivals the NSW Swifts, with the GIANTS also hosting games at Quay Centre (formerly Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre), Canberra’s AIS Arena and, new in 2018, the International Convention Centre in Sydney’s CBD.
“There’s a fresh air of excitement after today’s announcement as it marks one step closer to the 2018 season,” GIANTS Netball Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald said.
“We were disappointed with our last performance and how that ended the 2017 season. The fact we get the opportunity to rectify our Grand Final result first up in Round 1 is a bonus, especially in front of a big NSW home crowd at Qudos Bank Arena.
“While 2017 didn’t finish the way we wanted, we produced some great and entertaining netball and it’s provided us with a solid platform to build on next year.”
The GIANTS will welcome back injured Australian representatives Kristiana Manu’a (Achilles Tendon) and Captain Kimberlee Green (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) in 2018, with both smashing their respective rehabilitation programs.
While Green was in terrific form before succumbing to injury in Round 5 last season, Manu’a missed the entire inaugural Super Netball season after rupturing her Achilles during a pre-season practice match. However, solid training and hard work has seen Manu’a far exceed expectations with her rehabilitation ahead of schedule.
“We’re thrilled to have Kim and Kristiana back in the team; both are terrific athletes and are looking great on their respective rehab programs,” Fitzgerald said.
“It’s particularly special for Kristiana who was in career-best form before her injury. I was really looking forward to seeing her in the Orange dress for Suncorp Super Netball, and now she has that opportunity in 2018.”
Along with Green and Manu’a, the GIANTS welcome back nine of ten inaugural players with former training partner Kiera Austin elevated into the team as the only inclusion.
The GIANTS will officially begin their pre-season preparations in November following the conclusion of the Fast5 Netball World Series at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena, 28-29 October, in which a number of international representatives will return to NSW.
“The 2017 season feels so long ago, so I’m really excited to get the group together and get stuck into our 2018 preparations,” Fitzgerald said.
“Last season far exceeded my expectations. We saw incredible netball played by some of the world’s best athletes, who put on a show for the hundreds of thousands of Fans who turned up or tuned in each and every week.
“Now the bar has been set and every Club will be looking to go bigger and better in 2018, and that’s no different for GIANTS Netball. We can’t wait to get started.”
